Dr Katina Michael (MIEEE’04, SMIEEE’06) holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) from the Faculty of Informatics at the University of Wollongong, NSW, Australia (’03); a Master of Transnational Crime Prevention from the Faculty of Law at the University of Wollongong (’09) and a Bachelor of Information Technology from the School of Mathematical and Computing Science, NSW, Australia at the University of Technology, Sydney (’96).

She is presently an Associate Professor at the University of Wollongong in the School of Information Systems and Technology (’02-‘11) in Australia, and has previously been employed as a Senior Network Engineer at Nortel Networks (’96-‘01).

Roba Abbas

Dr Roba Abbas completed her Australian Research Council (ARC) funded Doctor of Philosophy on the topic of Location-Based Services Regulation in 2012, earning special commendations for her thesis titled Location-Based Services Regulation in Australia: A Socio-Technical Approach.

Abbas also graduated with first class Honours and Distinction in Information and Communication Technology (majoring in Business Information Systems) from the University of Wollongong Australia in 2006, earning a place on the Faculty of Informatics Dean’s Merit List.

Abbas has a strong interest in socio-technical theory, social media, and location-enabled technologies. She recently co-edited a special issue in Cases on Information Technology on the Social Implications of Emerging Technologies, and is presently co-editing a special section in the Encyclopaedia of Social Network Analysis and Mining. Abbas has previously lectured and tutored in ICT, and has five years industry experience in product management and enterprise information architecture.

Rajit Gadh

He has taught as a visiting researcher at UC Berkeley, has been a Assistant, Associate and Full Professor at University of Wisconsin-Madison, and did his sabbatical as a visiting researcher at Stanford University for a year. He has won several awards from NSF (CAREER award, Research Initiation Award, NSF-Lucent Industry Ecology Award, GOAL-I award), SAE (Ralph Teetor award), IEEE (second best student-paper, WTS), ASME (Kodak Best Technical Paper award), AT&T (Industrial ecology fellow award), Engineering Education Foundation (Research Initiation Award), William Wong Fellowship award from University of Hong-Kong, etc., and other accolades in his career. He is on the Editorial board of ACM Computers in Entertainment Publication and the CAD Journal. He has lectured and given keynote addresses worldwide in countries such as Belgium, Brazil , England, France, Germany, Holland, Hong Kong, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Singapore, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand, etc.

Dr. Gadh has a strong background in creating technology partnerships with industry. His industrial background started prior to his academic career, when he worked as an engineer and a technology lead for two software startup companies. He enjoys advising students in their quest towards technology startups. In collaboration with his students and researchers, he has co-founded two technology startups.

Eleni Kosta

Eleni obtained her law degree at the University of Athens in 2002 and a Masters degree in Public Law at the same University in 2004 .

In 2005 Eleni completed an LL.M. in legal informatics at the University of Hannover and in 2011 she was awarded the title of Doctor of Laws at the KU Leuven with a thesis on consent in data protection. Eleni is conducting research on privacy and data protection, specialising in electronic communications and new technologies.

She is currently involved in the FP7 research project A4Cloud.

Luis Kun

Dr. Luis Kun graduated from the Uruguayan Merchant Marine Academy. He got his BSEE, MSEE and Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from UCLA School of Engineering. Since 2003 Kun has been at the National Defense University, where he is a Professor of National Security Affairs at the Center for Hemispheric Defense Studies. He spent 14 years at IBM and later became the Director of Medical Systems Technology and Strategic Planning at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. As senior IT advisor to the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research, Kun led HPCC and Telehealth efforts. As a Distinguished Fellow at the CDC, he wrote the IT vision as the Acting Chief Information Technology Officer for the National Immunization Program. He lectures and writes extensively, in the intersection of Public Health, Healthcare, IT and Global Security and serves(d) in the Distinguished Visitor Program for the IEEE: Computer; Engineering in Medicine and Biology and the Society for Social Implications of Technology. A Fellow of the IEEE and the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, Kun received AIMBE’s first ever Fellow Advocate Award (2009). His (2002) IEEE-USA Citation of Honor reads “For exemplary contributions in the inception and implementation of a health care IT vision in the US.” The Administrator’s Award of Merit “For exceptional dedication and professional achievement that have greatly enhanced the recognition of AHCPR’s research in the HPCC Program.”Universidad Favaloro from Argentina, named him “Profesor Honoris Causa” (2009). Gary T. Marx

Professor Emeritus, M.I.T.

G.T. Marx has worked in the areas of race and ethnicity, collective behavior and social movements, law and society and surveillance studies. He is the author of Protest and Prejudice, Undercover: Police Surveillance in America, Collective Behavior and Social Movements (with Doug McAdam) and editor of Racial Conflict, Muckraking Sociology, Undercover: Police Surveillance in Comparative Perspective (with C. Fijnaut) and other books. With Norman Goodman, he revised Society Today and edited Sociology: Popular and Classical Approaches. Undercover received the Outstanding Book Award from the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences and Marx was named the American Sociological Association’s Jensen Lecturer for 1989-1990.

He received the Distinguished Scholar Award from its section on Crime, Law and Deviance, the Silver Gavel Award from the American Bar Association, the Bruce C. Smith Award for research achievement, the W.E.B. Dubois medal, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society for the Study of Social Problems. In 1992 he was the inaugural Stice Memorial Lecturer in residence at the University of Washington and he has been a UC Irvine Chancellor’s Distinguished Fellow, the A.D. Carlson Visiting Distinguished Professor in the Social Sciences at West Virginia University, and the Hixon-Riggs Visiting Professor of Science, Technology and Society at Harvey Mudd College. Major works in progress are books on new forms of surveillance and social control across borders. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley.

In recent decades he has been working on surveillance issues, illustrating how and why surveillance is neither good nor bad, but context and comportment make it so. He has sought to create a conceptual map of new ways of collecting, analyzing, communicating and using personal information.

Daniel Nagel

He focuses his practice on online and offline privacy issues, data security and international law. Nagel is a permanent contributor to the Austrian UN CISG database and a member of the Jean Monnet European Centre of Excellence, University of Leeds. Nagel studied law at the University of Heidelberg, the University of Innsbruck and at Leeds University.

He has published numerous papers in the field of privacy and co-authored the book Digital Whoness: Identity, Privacy and Freedom in the Cyberworld with M. Eldred and R. Capurro.

Narciso Cerpa

Cerpa has qualifications in computing engineering (BE) and information systems (MCom, PhD). He has 15 years of experience in the software development industry and 18 years of experience in academia and has held appointments in both Australia and Chile. He was Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Development and Innovation at the University of Talca during the period 2003-2006.

His research interests include software engineering, and electronic commerce. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Theoretical and Applied Electronic Commerce Research and one of its founding members. He is a member of the Editorial Review Board of the Journal of Global Information Management (JGIM), member of the Editorial Board of International Journal of Information Systems in the Service Sector (IJISSS), and member of the Scientific Editorial Board of the Revista de Universidad y Sociedad del Conocimiento. He is also a member of the IFIP Working Groups 6.11 (Electronic Commerce – Communication Systems) and 8.4 (E-Business Information Systems: Multi-disciplinary research and practice), and the Director of CollECTeR (Collaborative Electronic Commerce Technology and Research) Iberoamerica (2003-2008).

Douglas L. Baldwin

Founded the Special Needs Vision Clinic; a non-profit United Way/ Lions International Center for handicapped children, low vision individuals, and seniors. The clinic also serves indigent populations. The Special Needs Clinic has been serving Mid-Michigan since 1982.

Founder and director of The Institute for Innovative Blind Navigation (IIBN). This center was established in October, 1997. After a year of working collaboratively with Michigan State University, we established the Institute in Saginaw, Michigan.

Through a grant with NEC Foundation of America, IIBN put on four regional seminars between 2000 and 2002, called “Advances in Wayfinding Technology”. These seminars were held in Michigan, California, the State of Washington, and in Florida. Special interests in several areas, including: the neuropsychology of vision (brain mechanisms), child development, international blindness, human navigation and orientation, and in the area of technology and education (the future and its impact).

Roger Clarke

Christine Perakslis

Perakslis holds a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership (’09), as well as a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies in Educational Leadership (’08) and a Master of Science in Management (’05) with a focus on Organization Development. She is presently an Associate Professor in the MBA Program in the Alan Shawn Feinstein Graduate School at Johnson & Wales University, teaching such courses as: Operations Management, and Contemporary Issues & Strategies. She was previously employed as the Joint Chief Operating Officer of a privately-held company in the hospitality industry.

Perakslis’ research focuses on group integration competencies, behavioral motivators, and the social implications of technology. Her involvement with industry has included consulting work in various industries, as well as work with the Executive Forum for Coleman Research Group, the Editorial Advisory Board for IGI Global, the IEEE Technical Program Committee for the International Symposium on Technology and Society, and the Program Committee for the National Security Workshop. She continues to operate in a consulting capacity in industry which serves to broaden her industry-relevant teaching.

Herman T. Tavani

Herman T. Tavani (Ph.D., Temple University) is Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at Rivier University, where he previously served as Chair of the Philosophy Department and Director of the Liberal Studies Program. He has also held appointments as a visiting lecturer at Boston College, and as a visiting scholar/research fellow at Dartmouth College. Currently, he is a visiting scholar at the Harvard School of Public Health, where his research has centered on ethical issues at the intersection of environmental health and computational genomics.

Professor Tavani has written, edited, or co-edited five books on social and ethical aspects of information technology; the fourth edition of his textbook Ethics and Technology (Wiley) is planned for publication in December 2012. He also has edited or co-edited four books of (conference) proceedings, two book-length bibliographies, and ten special issues of journals (on themes in computer ethics). His numerous scholarly papers have been published as research articles in (refereed) journals and periodicals; as chapters in books of readings and proceedings; and as entries in encyclopedias and handbooks. Professor Tavani has delivered keynote addresses/invited talks and has presented peer-reviewed conference papers at institutions in nine countries in Europe and Asia, as well as at colleges and universities throughout the United States. He has been an invited guest on radio programs (discussing technology-and-society/ethics related topics) and has been interviewed by journalists in connection with his expertise in computer ethics; transcripts of these interviews have been published in books and periodicals.

Kenneth Pimple is an internationally-known expert on research ethics and the responsible conduct of research (RCR). He has over twenty years of experience in organizing faculty workshops on ethics and research ethics. He has published numerous articles on research ethics and one edited book, Research Ethics (Ashgate, 2008).

In 2009 he received a grant from the National Science Foundation to lead a project on ethical issues in pervasive information and communication technologies. His paper on the project, “Surrounded by Machines,” appears in the March 2011 edition of the Communications of the ACM. He is in the last stages of editing a book on the topic, Emerging Pervasive Information and Communication Technologies (PICT): Ethical Challenges, Opportunities and Safeguards (Springer, 2013) with twelve contributors.

Michael Eldred

Michael Eldred trained as a mathematician at Sydney University and then gained a doctorate in philosophy, where he has numerous publications in several languages in the areas of phenomenology and political philosophy.

Currently he is engaged as phenomenological ethicist in the project, A Culture of Privacy and Trust for the Internet of acatech, the National Academy of Science and Engineering, Berlin.

M.G. Michael

Dr M.G. Michael PhD (ACU), MA(Hons) (MacqUni), MTheol (SydUni), BTheol (SCD), BA (SydUni), DipProfCouns (AIPC) is a theologian and historian with cross-disciplinary qualifications in the humanities.

Michael brings with him a unique perspective to Information Technology and Computer Science. His formal studies include Ancient History, Theology, General Philosophy, Political Sociology, Ethics, Linguistics, and Government.

Formerly Honorary Senior Fellow in the School of Information Systems and Technology, at the University of Wollongong, Australia. He was previously the coordinator of Information & Communication Security Issues and since 2005 has guest-lectured and tutored in Location-Based Services, IT & Citizen Rights, Principles of eBusiness, and IT & Innovation. The focus of his current research extends to modern hermeneutics and the Apocalypse of John; the historical antecedents of modern cryptography; the auto-ID trajectory; data protection, privacy and ethics related issues; biometrics, RFID and chip implants; national security and government policy; dataveillance and überveillance; and more broadly the system dynamics between technology and society.

Jim Isaak

Vaibhav Garb

Vaibhav completed his PhD in Security Informatics from Indiana University, Bloomington.

His research investigates the cross-section of security and human behavior. Specifically, his dissertation work identifies the underlying determinants of perceived risk online. The idealized notion of the rational end-user has failed systematically and predictably. Effective risk communication must then provide the pertinent information for the relevant user in the specific context.

His current research includes cross-country examination of the macroeconomic factors that correlate with the prevalence of cybercrime, both voluntary, such as phish website hosting, and unsolicited, e.g. spambots. His research interests also include privacy, assisted living technologies, Internet governance, and information ethics.

Jean-Gabrielle Ganascia

Professor of Computer Science, Paris VI University.

He leads in the LIP6 laboratory (Laboratoire d’Informatique de Paris VI) the ACASA team. Initially focused on Knowledge Acquisition and Machine Learning, the scientific orientation of the ACASA team has evolved to encompass Cognitive Modeling, Digital Humanities and the design of Intelligent Agents. This has led to recent research on literary analysis (genetic criticism, stylistic analysis), modeling social representations (rebuilding social stereotypes from newspapers), Scientific Discovery (modeling theories in physical sciences and medicine), musicology and music (detection of recurrent patterns, simulation of improvisations), didactic, multi-media, intelligent TV and on the improvement of electronic reading facilities.

In a word, our scientific aim is to show that Artificial Intelligence is not only part of the “sciences of the nature” that investigate natural phenomenon; it is also a “science of the culture” (i.e. a field of the humanities), influencing the production of knowledge today.

Emil M. Petriu

Petriu is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (FIEEE), Fellow in the Canadian Academy of Engineering (FCAE) and Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada (FEIC).

Under a series of research grants and contracts from Canadian and Ontario funding agencies, the Canadian Space Agency, and industry, he developed bio-inspired random-pulse neural network hardware architectures, new tactile sensors and haptic human-computer interfaces, computer vision and multi-sensor fusion techniques for healthcare, security, industrial and space robotics applications. His current research interests include fuzzy systems, neural networks, biology inspired robotics, and symbiotic human-computer interaction.

He received the 2003 IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society Technical Award “for contributions to imaging processing systems, robotics, virtual reality and applications of artificial intelligence, fuzzy logic and neural networks” He was a co-recipient of the 2003 IEEE Donald G. Fink Prize Paper Award, the unique paper award presented by IEEE in that year. He was an Honorary Keynote Speaker at the 2009 IEEE Int. Conf. on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics, San Antonio, TX, USA.

Xi Chen

Dr. Chen has been a Visiting Scholar of Michael G. Foster School of Business, University of Washington. He has authored more than 50 refereed journal/ international conference papers, including papers in high impact peer-reviewed journals and has authored several books and patents.

He is the project chief of National Science Foundation and National Ministry of Education Science Foundation grants. He has received the Best Paper Award from the Chinese Academy of System Simulation and Government of Jiangsu Province. He has been elected into the Ministry of Education’s “New Century Excellent Talents Scheme”. He is a representative of several academic associations, and has been the chair of several Technical Committees, a member of organizing committees for recognised refereed conferences, and an editorial member of refereed international journals. His research focuses on information system security, services engineering and information system simulation.

Pete Wassel

Wassel oversees government and company solutions that utilize digital eyewear. Essentially, Augmate provides visual efficiency tools for businesses by merging the digital and physical worlds using eye-wear, wearable computers, and mobile devices. Before, Augmate, Pete was a Program Director at IBM, he managed Digital Media Distribution products and Content Management Systems at IBM’s Los Angeles and Silicon Valley Labs. In other roles, he managed IBM’s PartnerWorld Program containing 115,000 Business Partners, ran Operations and Executive Relations for ibm.com and has been a Project Management Professional in IBM Global Services.

In his spare time Pete maintains the hands-free standard at AR Standards for Open and Interoperable Augmented Reality Experiences. He is the Champion for the digital eyewear platform at the Augmented World Expo in Santa Clara, CA. and Pete moderates the AR Glasses Discussion Group on LinkedIn, a professional network dedicated to the advancement of Augmented Reality Eyewear.

Pete also graduated from the JFK Special Warfare School in the military and has been a legislator who has passed 1000+ laws.

Dr Katherine Albrecht

Simon Bronnit

Director – CEPS

Professor Bronitt is the Director of CEPS – the Australian Research Council (ARC) Centre of Excellence in Policing and Security.

Before joining CEPS and Griffith University, he was Professor of Law in the Australian National University, holding several leadership roles including serving as the Director of the ANU Centre of European Studies in the Research School of Humanities 2003-2009. In that role he secured successive large EU grants to support the Centre. He was also the lead researcher in an ARC Discovery Project on Terrorism Law and numerous ARC Linkage Projects.

Professor Bronitt is a leading criminal justice and sociolegal scholar, with an established international and local profile and network, and has published widely on criminal law and justice issues, including cybercrime, counter terrorism law and human rights, covert policing. He also holds Adjunct Professorial positions at ANU and CSU.

Professor G.Q. Huang

Dr G. Q. Huang gained his BEng and PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Southeast University (China) and Cardiff University (UK) in 1983 and 1991 respectively.

He joined Department of IMSE at HKU in late 1996 and now is a tenured professor. Dr. Huang is a Chartered Engineer, a fellow of IEE(UK), HKIE(HK), ASME(USA), and member of IIE(USA). Professor Huang’s research activities have spread across multiple disciplines including collaborative product and process development, cross-border logistics and supply chain management, and product service systems focusing on industrial informatics and operations management.

Professor Huang has a strong track record of obtaining externally peer reviewed research inputs from funding sources, and produced a strong number of high quality research outputs. His research has been supported with numerous grants from various funding sources including RGC, HK/UK and HK/Germany joint research, ITF (Innovation and Technology Fund), internal research and teaching grants from HKU, National Science Foundation of China (NSFC), China 863 Hi-Tech programme, provincial governments and industries.

With the substantial funding inputs, Prof Huang has made significant contributions in related research areas. The outputs have taken several major forms including publication of quality papers in reputable journals, patents and software registration copyrights. Professor Huang has been listed as “Top 1% Most Cited Scholar” in related research field. Four of his journal papers are identified as “Top 1% Most Cited Papers” in the corresponding areas. In addition, some of Professor Huang’s research outcomes have been packaged into decision support systems and successfully applied in industries for daily operations, resulting significant improvements in operational quality and efficiency.

Dr Marcus Wigan is Principal of Oxford Systematics, Professorial Fellow at the University of Melbourne, Professor of both Transport and of Information Systems at Napier University Edinburgh and Visiting Professor at Imperial College London and serves on the Ethics Task Force and the Economic Legal and Social Implications Committee of the Australian Computer Society, of which he is a Fellow. He has worked on the societal aspects of transport, surveillance and privacy both as an engineer and policy analyst and as an organisational psychologist. He has published for over 30 years on the interactions between intellectual property, identity and data integration in electronic road pricing and intelligent transport systems for both freight and passenger movements.

Marcus Wigan has qualifications in a wide range of fields from physics to psychology, business to intellectual property law. He has served on Ministerial Advisory Councils, as expert advisor to Parliamentary Committees and chaired Standards Australia Committees. He has published, participated and researched in transport and communications issues for over forty years. A life member of Electronic Frontiers Australia and the Australian Privacy Foundation, he remains a long term advocate for civil liberties and equity with special reference to ICT, telecommunications and the internet. He was recently elected onto the board of ACCAN (Australian Communications Consumer Action Network).

Pascal Perez

Pascal Perez is currently the Inaugural Professor of Infrastructure Simulation & Modelling at the SMART Infrastructure Facility, University of Wollongong. He is a specialist of Integrative Social Simulation, using Multi-Agent Systems technologies to explore complex infrastructure systems. He is a member of the Technical Committee of the Australian Urban Research Infrastructure Network (AURIN). He is also a member of the Modelling and Decision Support Division of Simulation Australia and of the Modelling and Simulation Society of Australia and New Zealand (MSSANZ). In 2002, he received an ARC-International Linkage Fellowship to develop social modelling research at the Australian National University. Professor Perez has published 100 refereed papers and book chapters. In 2006, he co-edited with his colleague David Batten the book ‘Complex Science for a Complex World’ (ANU E Press).

The SMART Infrastructure Facility is defining a new area of research called ‘integrated infrastructure planning and management’.

As part of its mission, SMART brings a holistic approach to infrastructure through the analysis of geospatial, physical and temporal data, along with seeking out economic, environmental and social impact. It is only from this comprehensive perspective that we can plan for a future to make our communities more liveable, prosperous and vibrant. Australia’s future prosperity and quality of life depend on the nation’s complex web of infrastructure – rail, air, road, shipping, energy, water, and telecommunications and social amenity.

Although these systems constitute the basic fabric of our society, their complexities and interdependencies are poorly understood and rarely researched or taught in a comprehensive manner. As a result, past major infrastructure projects have not always been evaluated and developed in a systemic and holistic way. SMART recognises that good infrastructure solutions take into account the whole system and not just individual assets. For a long time, business and the community have recognised that infrastructure system must be greater than the sum of its parts, and SMART will help governments realise that expectation.

Amal Graafstra

RFID Toys author Amal Graafstra, is the owner of several technology and mobile communications companies and a double RFID implantee. Amal loves thinking up interesting ways to combine and apply various technologies in his daily life.

Since learning about RFID technology used in cats and dogs for identification, Amal wanted to leverage that technology himself. Getting implants meant there was no need to carry an RFID access card around and he could implement his own RFID access control systems instead of buying expensive off-the-shelf products.

Soon after getting his first implant and posting some pictures of the process for a few friends, word quickly spread over the Internet and soon he found himself talking to everyone from industry players to clergy to book publishers about RFID technology and its possibilities.Amal has been interviewed about his adventures in RFID by television, print, and online news media from around the world, including the Discovery Channel’s Daily Planet program. He uses his RFID implants to log into his computer, access his front door and opening his car door.

Nikola Serbedzija

Nikola Šerbedžija works at Fraunhofer FOKUS where he is responsible for new research activities and innovative technology.

He was a visiting professor at University of Technology Sydney (1999-2000) and at University of Arts, Berlin (2000 – 2008). His major research areas are: Adaptive Control, Pervasive Adaptation, Ubiquitous Computing, Middleware Architectures, and Internet Programming, mostly applied within embedded and real-time systems, ambient assistance and empathic systems.

As a principle designer he led the developments of a number of practical systems in vehicular, in- and out-door infrastructures and e-commerce domains. He is currently involved in a large EU project dealing with autonomous control [ASCENS project: http://www.ascens-ist.eu/].

Mark Gasson

Dr. Mark N. Gasson is a visiting research fellow at the School of Systems Engineering, University of Reading, UK. In 2010 he became the first human to be infected by a computer virus, using an RFID device implanted in his body. In 2009 he brought attention to the privacy issues of GPS enabled smartphones by creating detailed profiles of users tracked across Europe.

His interdisciplinary research interests focus on user-centric applications of emerging technologies and pushing the envelope of Human-Machine interaction. In 2005 he was awarded a Ph.D. for invasively interfacing the nervous system of a human to a computer system and in 2010 he had the honour of being the General Chair for the IEEE International Symposium on Technology and Society (ISTAS 2010) in Australia.

Dr. Gasson regularly engages with the international press and other media outlets, including as a guest expert for BBC news. He is passionate about engaging the public in engineering science through a variety of activities and has delivered well over 100 invited public and academic lectures internationally including at TEDx.

Dr. Gasson was awarded his first degree in Cybernetics and Control Engineering in 1998 from the Department of Cybernetics, University of Reading and until 2010 was a senior research fellow at the School of Systems Engineering, University of Reading.

Before joining Birkbeck College in 2002 as a lecturer he worked as the Research and Development Manager for a multinational information technology corporation in Athens, Greece, where he was responsible for the strategic development of new IT products in the areas of knowledge management and mobile internet; as an Internet security officer for the Ministry of Defence, Athens, where he designed the Hellenic armed forces Internet exchange and domain name systems; and as a research fellow for Imperial College, London, where he conducted research in distributed systems.

His current research interests include the investigating the effects of social activity on system architectures, and exploring mechanisms to support human dynamics and findability. He is a member of the ACM, SIGMOBILE, the IEEE, the IEEE Communications and the IEEE Computer Society.

Laurence F. Johnson, Ph.D.

Dr. Larry Johnson is an acknowledged expert on emerging technology and its impacts on society and education, and has written five books, seven chapters, and published more than 50 papers and research reports on the topic. He speaks regularly on the topics of creativity, innovation, and technology trends, and has delivered more than 75 keynote addresses to a long list of distinguished groups and organizations all over the world. He is the founder of the Horizon Project, which produces the acclaimed series of Horizon Reports that are used by over a million educators in more than 100 countries.

Dr. Johnson currently serves as Chief Executive Officer of the New Media Consortium, an international not-for-profit consortium dedicated to the exploration and use of new media and new technologies, and Director of the Edward and Betty Marcus Institute for Digital Education in the Arts (MIDEA). The NMC’s and MIDEA’s hundreds of member institutions constitute an elite list of the most highly regarded universities, museums, and research centers in the world.

In his current post at the NMC, Johnson routinely brings visionaries and thought leaders from across the globe together to define and explore new ways of thinking about and using technology, and to examine emerging trends and issues. Professor Axel Kupper

He heads Ryerson University’s Law Research Centre which focuses on research related to law and legal education. He is also the Director of the Privacy and Cyber Crime Institute, a centre for research related to privacy and cybercrime. He is an alumnus of Tel-Aviv University, holding a B.Sc. and LL.B. degree, and of the University of Toronto, holding an LL.M. and S.J.D.

Professor Levin’s research interests include the protection and legal regulation of personal and private information, both locally and internationally. Among his recent research areas are social media, online advertising, the workplace, mobile devices, corporate risk management, electronic health records and the smart electricity grid. He has been a recipient of funding from the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, Public Safety Canada and Industry Canada.
